PLATE 67Happy HourChapter VIII · Fields & Wildflowers
I found this patch of thistle humming one warm afternoon and just stood still to see how many would come. Fritillaries never hold a pose for long, so catching three at once, with the lower one wide open and sharp, was mostly patience and a bit of luck. The light stayed soft and green all around, and I kept my breathing slow so I wouldn't spook them off the bloom.
