A few hundred brown pelicans had claimed this wet sandbar, preening and dozing while the tide worked around their feet. The fog softened the sea stacks down to gray shapes and pulled all the color out of the day, which is a kind of light I've learned to stop fighting and just photograph. I kept low at the edge of the water and moved slow, and for once the whole crowd let me stay.
