The Coast

Where the land runs out of room and the tide keeps the hours.

The Coast

Another area I enjoy visiting with the camera away from Idaho is the coast. Whether it be west, east or on an island in the middle of a large body of water, being on a coast somewhere always provides a needed break from the rigors of life and instantly becomes a home away from home.

There's a reason the coast pulls us back again and again. It isn't loud, and it doesn't ask anything of you the way life does sometimes. The waves keep their own rhythm: slow, certain, and soothing with the kind of sound the mind finds relaxing. Mine does anyway. Stand at the edge of it long enough and the noise of everything else starts to fall away. Let the water slap at you and for a while the only thing that matters is what's right in front of you.

The photos in this section come from various coasts I have had the privilege to visit. Here I wasn't chasing something dramatic, but was instead just paying attention to what the coast quietly offered: a group of pelicans congregating for the winter, the particular color of gold the sun gives through a mist heavy sky, the crowds enjoying a spring break, the sun coming or going with the gift of color that entrance or exit delivers.

The same magnetism that draws people to the wind, water and waves of the coast is what let these moments happen for me. This group of photos is my attempt to keep the feeling i get there alive: the calm, the scale, the wild things that call the coast home.
