PLATE 70Still On The ClockChapter IX · Monuments & Memory
I'm an Idaho man, so this one was a long way from my usual haunts. I stood out on the Mall well after the crowds had gone, hands starting to numb in the cold, waiting for the clouds to drift across just right while the floodlights held the marble in that warm amber glow. The flags kept their watch around the base, and I had the obelisk and its two thin shafts of light mostly to myself.
