I stood at the foot of the steps and let the marble do the talking. The light was hard that night and the sky was nearly black behind it, so all that white stone seemed to be holding its own lamp. You have to look twice to find him, seated and significant between the columns, but when you do you recognize his greatness immediately, and are reminded once again that because of him, a nation, under God, did not perish from the earth.
