PLATE 71Roll CallChapter IX · Monuments & Memory
I got there late, when the little ground lights come up and the polished granite starts holding what it can of the night sky. The wet path runs toward Lincoln through the bare winter trees, and the names go with it - thousands of them - catching the light one at a time. I stood a good while before I raised the camera. Respectful. Sorrowful. Thoughtful. It didn't feel like a place to hurry.
