From up on the flats you would never guess this was here; the sagebrush just runs to the horizon until the ground drops out from under it. I set up at the rim as the first gold burned along the skyline and watched the river feel its way through the shadows below, in no particular hurry to reach anywhere. I can relate to that pace out here. The wind up top can cut right through you at that hour, but you do not walk away from a view like this until the color is gone.
