I hiked out to the basalt rim with the cold already in my hands, hoping the sky would do something before it quit for the night. It did, for about a minute: a ribbon of stark color on an otherwise colorless winter scene, the Snake making its slow, uninterested course through the canyon below. I was not alone. Another fellow on a distant ledge got there first, witnessing the brief color show, and I was glad for the company.
