I hiked out to the rim, patiently waiting while the light was still making up its mind. It finally decided to set the far walls on fire, the clouds aglow. Down on the floor the river was in no rush either, folding back on itself the way it has for longer than anyone's been around to watch. I stayed until the color drained off the clouds, the canyon going dark, then in the darkness felt my way back to the tent.
