PLATE 76The Rest of the WearyChapter VII · The Coast
Early morning found us and many others at Poipu beach to catch the wondrous site of multiple Hawaiian green sea turtles, or "Honu", resting overnight. A day at sea off the island of Kauai is enough to make anyone - and anything - want to sleep the night away. This turtle has rebounded significantly in recent years from predation, loss of nesting habitat, fishing by-catch, disease and poaching. Pictured here are a few that have grown to an average size of about 200 lbs., but they get much larger - up to 500 lbs. for a very old adult. Most of the ancients - 80 to 100 years old - are gone now, but with the protections placed on these and hundreds of others, the chances for senior citizenship in the Honu realm are excellent.Read the full story: The Coast →
