PLATE 14Why We GoChapter II · The High Country
I hiked over to this little tarn before sunset and stood around in the chilled, thin air watching and waiting for something to happen. For a few minutes the sun found just that far granite peak and left the rest of the basin in shade, and the water was calm enough to hand the whole thing back. The red on the slope is the high country's way of saying summer is almost done up here. Shots like this are why we go miles carrying heavy packs, eating less than desirable food, sleeping on hard ground. The resulting capture provides a memory and an opportunity in the future to once again visually get away.
