PLATE 15Why We Go IIChapter II · The High Country
I hiked up this valley for the peaks and ended up crouched in the creek rocks, watching the low brush go to fire while the pines held their green like they hadn't gotten the news yet. The light was doing that soft thing it does right before it quits for the day, warming the granite one last time. I stood there longer than my knees wanted, and I've never once regretted that trade.
