PLATE 19Not QuiteChapter II · The High Country
The wind quit for about a minute, and that was all the water needed to hand every ridge and cloud right back to me. We'd hiked in the evening before and found this spot late in the afternoon of our second day. Waiting for the lake to go glass-still, which it does on its own schedule, was not an option so I had to take what it gave: not quite a mirror, but close enough to appreciate the duplication it offered. Summer up in the high country gives you a handful of these moments if you're willing to be there before it decides to happen.
