The American White Pelican: large, social with its kind, migratory. The Herring Gull: small, social with its kind, noisy. The gull is right at home here in Idaho during winter, but the pelican is way out of its seasonal territory: far to the south along the gulf and into Mexico. Don't know if this guy was hurt or maybe suffering from an identity crisis. Whatever the cause, he seemed content to ride the gulls' company for a while. If the fish aren't cooperating, it's always a pleasure when nature steps in and gives the camera something to catch. I sat back and watched the group - noisy locals and a wayward giant - rearrange the river's shallow water politics.
